Rice Water for Hair Growth

The 411 on Rice Water & Natural Hair

Have you heard about the latest craze? Using rice water to condition hair has become the latest talk in the natural hair community and here’s why:

When it comes to rice water, it provides many vitamins and minerals such as amino acids, B vitamins, vitamin E, and antioxidants. Women in China, Japan, and Southeast Asia have been practicing this method for centuries claiming it has resulted in healthy, long hair.

Benefits of using rice water on your hair:

  • Detangles your hair, making it easier to handle and decreasing breakage
  • Makes your hair smoother, shinier, and stronger
  • Makes the hair grow long
  • Reduces split ends
  • Improves hair elasticity
  • Hydrates the scalp

When making your rice water, there are two ways: soaking it (the quickest way) or boiling it.

  • Soaking- take ½ cup of rice and rinse thoroughly to remove dirt. Mix rice in a bowl with 2-3 cups of water, leaving it to soak for about 30 minutes. Then, strain the rice water into a clean bowl and let it sit at room temperature for 12-24 hours, allowing it to ferment (creates the highest level of antioxidants and benefits). Refrigerate the rice water until you’re ready to use, but discard the mixture after a week.

You’ll use the rice water after shampooing and conditioning like you normally do. Be sure to pay special attention to pouring the rice water on your scalp and working it throughout your hair. Leave on for no more than 5-10min and then rinse out. You’ll notice how much shinier & strong your hair feels.
